In our science lesson today, year 5 have been exploring day and night. We have explored the Sun and the Earth, the axis that the Earth is on and how it has a tilt of 23.5 degrees, and where parts of our Earth are located – the North and South Pole, the Northern and Southern Hemisphere, and the equator. The children carried out seeing day and night practically by using a ball for the Earth, marked with an X to show the Northern Hemisphere and our two fingers to show where the axis is located, and a torch. We then shone the torch onto the Earth to represent the day time, and the shadowed back of the Earth would be in the night time. The class loved the lesson and enjoyed seeing how the Earth’s daytime and nighttime are created.
