Today year 5 enjoyed finding out about the theory of evolution as part of their new science topic. First we found the definitions of some new vocabulary hidden outside and we now know the meanings of species, variation, adaptation and evolution. After this we carried out a ‘Battle of the Beaks’ investigation. We used tweezers, pegs and chopsticks as our ‘beaks’ and demonstrated what Charles Darwin found out about how the finches had adapted over time to suit their environment. We also played a game using coloured bibs, which helped us to understand how the population of a species can increase or decrease depending on their characteristics. They also produced some fabulous writing in their new workbooks.
