British Science Week

In Year 5 Juniper, we have been carrying out lots of exciting activities to celebrate British Science Week. Over the past week, we have had British Science Week themed lessons in many of our subjects. This year’s theme is ‘Being Curious’.

Maths

In our Maths lesson, we had different stations situated around the classroom with different activities to complete. The children travelled around each station in their groups to work collaboratively together to solve the problems. They really enjoyed this session and displayed great teamwork throughout the activities.

Computing

In Computing, the children had to use their knowledge on coding to create a series of movements in a game creation session to guard a castle. The guard had to move strategically in order to protect the castle from any enemies by performing loops, conditionals, and variables whilst exploring strategies and encouraging curiosity about ‘what works best’ in coding and game design.

Art

Our focus for Art was “Looking Closely” where we focused on observation and detail. The children created their own version of a ‘zoomed in’ flower inspired by American artist Georgia O’Keeffe. The children were amazing at following the steps and blending their oil pastels together. The pieces look fantastic and the children should be extremely proud of the work they have produced.

Science

Our Science lesson looked at creating a vehicle that would work on the Moon. The children had to take into account the surface of the moon, the lack of gravity, and the materials that would be suitable for a vehicle in space. The children were told they had to include solar panels or a battery pack for powering the vehicle, a method of communication to others, and a tool to grab or hold things with. The children made incredible designs and were able to build these in our DT session.

Design and Technology

Following on from our Science lesson, the children were able to create their designs for their lunar rover vehicle, making sure to incorporate the details that they had included on their plan to ensure their vehicle design had all of the design criteria needed for a lunar vehicle.

Well done to Year 5. They have done brilliantly with all of their British Science Week activities and we are very proud of them all!
