On Thursday we started to learn about the properties of certain metals. We learnt lots of new vocabulary such as:

  • Alloy
  • Malleable
  • Conductor
  • Tensile
  • Magnetic
  • Rust
  • Oxidise
  • Durable

We then used these words and our new knowledge of the metals to predict what Optimus Prime (from Transformers) would be made from. We gave reasons for our answers such as…

“I think he would be made from stainless steel because then he won’t rust coming in and out of the earth’s atmosphere”

We then set up an experiment, deciding what we wanted to find out, deciding on our equipment list and making predictions as to what we thought would happen. We had 5 pennies and 5 liquids. Some children predicted that the pennies might fizz when placed in the liquids. Some thought that they would rust over time.

We made it a fair test by using the same sized penny and we also agreed that we needed to measure each liquid out EXACTLY the same for each penny.

We added variables by changing the types of liquids. We had water, vinegar, full sugar Coke, lemon juice and ketchup!

What do you think will happen to our pennies? Please comment below!
