In Geography this half term, Year 5 have been focusing on slums – particularly Dharavi in Mumbai, India and Rocinha in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Today, we working in groups to figure out what were the biggest challenges faced by people living in slums – sanitation, education, crime, jobs, health and housing. We worked in groups to write down what problems were involved with each topic, how they could be improved, and the possible cost in relation to solving the issues. During our lesson today, we also accessed Digimaps which allowed us to see the area on a map, see the amount of houses within the area, and also assess the population and it’s changes over time. The children did a fantastic job at saving the slums!
