This week Year 4 Maple have been celebrating British Science week and thinking about what it means to be a Scientist. The children each drew a picture of what they think a scientist looks like and unsurprisingly we had a lot of Einstein style drawings. We want young people to see that science is so much more than this and so we discussed stereotypes about who scientists are, what they look like, and what they do. We want the children to understand that there are a wide range of people and job roles which involve science and there isn’t simply one type of Scientist.

To tie in with our ‘Space’ topic we researched and created fact files about the famous Scientist and astronaut Mae Jemison. Mae is famous for being an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She became the first African American woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour.

During the day we also investigated how making sustainable food choices can help save our planet. When we grow food it uses resources from the planet such as water, land and energy. If we use more resources than the planet can replace, then we are living unsustainably. In this activity we looked at the ‘food miles’ different foods travel before they reach our plate. We then had a try at designing our own healthy, planet-friendly burgers, focusing on trying to keep the burgers environmental footprint as small as possible.

The children have worked so hard and have produced some excellent pieces of work!
