As part of this half term’s Science topic we are learning about physical and chemical changes. Today’s lesson focus was ‘What is a chemical change and how can we identify them?’. We learnt that a chemical change is often difficult to reverse and that the change is usually permanent. We carried out a secret code experiment to create our own chemical change. The children wrote a secret word of their choice on a piece of paper using a baking soda and water mixture, the water then evaporated leaving baking soda crystals that form letters. The purple pigment from a blackberry reacted with the baking soda forming a new, blue substance where the letters appeared! Since a new substance is formed, this is a chemical reaction.
