The children explored how painting could be used to express feelings of happiness, inspired by the artist Gillian Ayres. They were encouraged to paint a colourful garden that made them feel calm and joyful.

The activity was modelled by asking children to suggest colours and objects for their gardens. We recapped how to choose primary colours, mix secondary colours and decide where to place different items.

The children then created their own colourful gardens using paint, brushes, water and paper. They were reminded to clean their brushes between colours to keep them bright and clear.
