As part of Financial Awareness Week, Year 2 have been learning all about the difference between wants and needs! We started our learning by watching a short video that helped us understand why it’s important to think carefully about the things we buy and use. The children quickly discovered that needs are the things we must have to survive, like food, water and shelter, while wants are the things that are nice to have but we can live without—like toys or sweets. After the video, we completed three fun and thoughtful activities to explore this idea further.
Activity 1:
We looked at a range of pictures showing different items and sorted them into two groups—‘wants’ and ‘needs’. The children had great discussions as they decided where to put things like water, treats and toys!
Activity 2:
Next, we imagined being stuck on a desert island. The challenge was to think about what we would need to survive. The class came up with lots of clever ideas such as clean water, food, shelter, and even ways to stay warm and safe. It was wonderful to see how the children applied their new understanding of needs to a real-life situation.
Activity 3:
For our final activity, we got moving! On one side of the room was a sign saying ‘Need’, on the other ‘Want’, and at the back ‘Don’t Know’. As different words were called out—like water, meals, sweets, playtime, and a tablet—children moved to the side of the room they thought was correct. Finally, everyone had the chance to suggest their own items and even try to persuade others whether they were wants or needs.
The children showed fantastic thinking, teamwork, and reasoning skills throughout the lesson.
