This week in forest school year 6 Sycamore have been doing some science experiments
.

This half term we are looking at Particles and chemical reactions in science so Miss Brown planned us some science experiments for during forest school. Some of the children had a go at using the flint and steel to light the fire and then discussed the different materials we had gathered and how quickly they would burn and if the material would change in the fire. We burnt sponges, hay, paper, cardboard and metal. We discovered that burning paper causes a combustion reaction when its cellulose reacts with the oxygen in the air, producing new substances like carbon dioxide and ash.
In groups we also tried the ‘exploding sandwich bag experiment’, where a baking soda and vinegar reaction creates carbon dioxide causing the sandwich bag to inflate and eventually pop.
Miss Brown set up a sieving experiment where the children discussed the difference between sieving sand and soil.
The children in Sycamore then had chance to explore the forest area and some children created pictures, made dens and played hide and seek.
