Year 5 Pine have been busy investigating different ways to separate mixtures as part of our Science topic, Materials: Mixtures and Separation.
Pine quickly discovered that sieving is an effective way of separating solids of different sizes. They carefully observed how the larger pieces remained in the colander, the medium-sized particles were trapped in the sieve and the smallest particles passed through onto the plate.
The children then put their scientific skills to the test by drawing and annotating diagrams to explain how the sieving process works, using key scientific vocabulary.
We also explored how magnets can be used to separate certain materials, observing how iron filings could be removed from sand using magnetic attraction.
It was a fantastic hands-on lesson filled with teamwork, scientific thinking and plenty of discoveries! Well done, Pine – you made brilliant scientists🧪✨
