This half term year 4 will be learning all about space. During today’s lesson our focus question was ‘What are solar and lunar eclipses?’. To help us understand how an eclipse works we went into the playground and worked in groups of 3, with one person playing the role of the Sun, the Moon or the Earth. We worked together to try to demonstrate how Earth orbits the Sun and how the Moon orbits earth. This helped the children to understand how an eclipse can occur.

We also learnt about the phases of the moon with the help of Oreos!

We first considered how the moon can look different – sometimes it’s fully round, sometimes it’s just a sliver, and often it’s somewhere in between. So, as the moon rotates around the Earth, the sun lights up whatever side of the moon is facing it. From our position on earth, we see whatever portion of the moon is reflecting the sun’s light. We modelled our Oreo’s to reflect the different shapes and then enjoyed eating them afterwards.
