This week for STEAM Week, the children in early years have enjoyed a range of exciting learning experiences across Science, Engineering, Art, DT and Mathematics.

In science, the children explored how animals are similar and different by observing and comparing their features. They also investigated the importance of clean water and discussed ways we can care for the environment. The children were able to filter dirty water and make it clean.

Our story focus was The Three Little Pigs, which inspired us to be engineers. The children worked together to plan, design, and build houses strong enough to stand up to the Big Bad Wolf! Using a variety of materials, they tested their structures and reflected on how they could make them stronger and sturdier. It was wonderful to see their teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience in action.

The children also explored the fascinating world of dinosaurs through hands-on activities, discussions, and imaginative play. They enjoyed sharing ideas, comparing dinosaur features, and developing their communication and creative thinking skills.

In art, the children created expressive paintings inspired by Jackson Pollock. Using splatter, drip, and swirl techniques with a range of tools, they explored movement, colour, and cause and effect. The children loved experimenting with different ways to create marks and proudly shared their unique artwork.

In the Nursery children have been reading the story ‘Bird builds a nest’ this week.

To link to art, we looked at the work of Jackson Pollock. We discussed the colours and technique he used for his drip painting. The children then created a class drip painting inspired by Jackson Pollock which included birds in flight. They all took turns dripping and splashing the paint across the large paper. We then peeled the bird templates off to reveal the outlines.

The children also got the chance to design and create different types of vehicles using junk, wooden sticks and wheels. This linked to design and technology. All the children found it really exciting that their vehicles could really drive! They created cars, vans, fire engines and aeroplanes.

It has been a wonderful week filled with creativity, exploration, teamwork, and curiosity. The children have had a very exciting week and they have all worked really hard!
