As part of Financial Awareness Week, Year 2 have been learning all about the difference between wants and needs!
We began by discussing the difference between wants and needs. The children grasped that needs are essential for survival—like food, water, and shelter—while wants are things we enjoy but don’t actually need, such as toys or chocolate.
We then took part in three different activities:
Activity 1:
We examined a variety of pictures showing everyday items and worked together to sort them into two categories: wants and needs. The children had some brilliant conversations as they discussed where things like water, chocolate, and toys belonged.
Activity 2:
Next, we imagined being stranded on a desert island. The challenge was to decide what we would truly need to survive. The class came up with thoughtful suggestions, including clean water, food, shelter, and ways to keep warm.
Throughout the session, the children demonstrated excellent reasoning, teamwork, and critical thinking. A fantastic effort all round!

It’s great to see that the kids are using critical thinking to categorize items and debate their importance. This is a fantastic way to foster both practical knowledge and collaboration!
