Anti-bullying week

This week St Lukes is celebrating anti-bullying week. As part of this, the children were asked to wear odd socks today to help us recognise and celebrate that we are all different and unique. Throughout the week children will be taking part in assemblies and lessons to help them understand that our differences make us special and should be celebrated and not used as a negative. They will also be talking about how it feels Read more

Maths fun!

We had a lovely morning in Maths! We just started ‘subtraction’ and used every day word problems to solve the calculations. For example, Mrs Nuttall had 10 bananas and she ate 2. How many did she have left? Putting the calculations into real life problems help the children to understand what ‘subtraction’ means.

A long time ago….

We have had lots of fun this afternoon looking at different artefacts from the past. First we had a guess what we thought each object was for. We had lots of great ideas, with the hot water bottle being a piggy bank, the carpet beater a cane and a flat iron weights for excercising. Can you guess what the different items were for? We then talked about why we don’t have some of these objects Read more

Work at it Whizz

We have been talking lots about growth mindset and Whizz has been busy this week working with children that have been pushing themselves and trying hard with their work. Here’s just a few of the children he’s been working with this week. Throughout the week he worked with Leigh, Riley and Elena in English:   Madison during TT Rockstars, Esmee and Eva during Power Maths and Maybel in phonic:

Secret Reader

This morning, we were very excited to see Monty’s mum come into class to read us a story. Everyone couldn’t believe the story was about Monty. Thank you very much for coming in and reading to us. We can’t wait to find out who is coming in next week!

Exploring the size and scale of the solar system

Year 5 used their maths skills to complete a table containing the size of the planets and their distances from the sun. We quickly realised that we wouldn’t be able to measure these out in the classroom so we scaled the measurements down. We explored which fruits would best represent the planets from the scaled down measurements. Outside, we them ordered the planets (fruit) and plotted them according to their distance from the sun. We Read more

Science investigations

This morning Year 5 were lucky enough to have a visitor come in to class to carry out some exciting investigations. We learnt how to be safe with lots of different materials and completed challenges to sort and observe the materials.

Useful websites

Last year at Parents Evening, quite a few parents asked for useful links to help with their child’s learning, particularly for Phonics and Maths.   I have copied and pasted a number of websites we use regularly at school to support your child’s learning. I hope these are helpful 🙂   Useful website links for Phonics: https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/ https://www.phonicsbloom.com/ http://www.letters-and-sounds.com/phase-3-games.html http://www.familylearning.org.uk/phonics_games.html   Useful website links for Maths: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/5-7-years/counting https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/category/22/most-popular https://play.numbots.com/#/intro http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/websites/4_11/site/numeracy.shtml
