Year 5 Pine have taken part in ‘Steam week’ this week, celebrating science, technology, engineering, art and maths. This years theme is curiosity.

Science – For our science activity the children had the task of designing a moon rover. They had to think about the challenges of driving on the moon and the type of components their rover would need. We thought about how we could power the vehicles, the commutation equipment we would need and the type of terrain the vehicle would cover. The designs led us into our DT challenge of building the vehicles.

Engineering – Continuing on from our science task the children had to work together to become engineers and build their moon rovers. They evaluated their initial ideas and put their thoughts together to utilise their teamwork skills and build a rover. The children used lots of recycled materials and the end results were fantastic.

Computing – In computing, the children built on their coding knowledge to create a series of movements within a game creation with the aim of guarding  castle. The children had to think about ‘what works best’ in the coding and game design.

Art – Our task in art was to learn about the famous artist Georgia O’Keeffe. We read, and watched videos, about her life and looked at some examples of her work. The children recreated their own versions of her famous flower artwork using oil pastels.

Maths – During our maths task the children had to navigate different stations around the room with different activities to complete. The children had to use their problem solving skills to work together to find the correct answers.

Well done Year 5 you have produced lots of fantastic work that you can be proud of.
