This half term in Science, we are exploring particles and chemical reactions, so Miss Brown planned a series of hands-on investigations during Forest School. Some of the children practised using flint and steel to start a fire before discussing the different materials we had collected and how quickly each might burn—or whether it would change at all. We tested sponges, hay, paper, cardboard, and metal. The children observed that burning paper undergoes a combustion reaction, where the cellulose reacts with oxygen to produce new substances such as carbon dioxide and ash.
In groups, the children also completed the “exploding sandwich bag” experiment, where a reaction between baking soda and vinegar creates carbon dioxide gas, inflating the bag until it pops.
Miss Brown also introduced a sieving activity, prompting the children to compare how sand and soil behave when separated through a sieve.
To finish the session, Rowan enjoyed time exploring the forest area. Some children created artwork, others built dens, and many took part in games such as hide and seek.
