Throughout the Autumn term, Year 5 Juniper and Pine have been working on a topic in Science called ‘Separating Mixtures’. The children have learnt about what a pure substance is and what a mixture is. They have learnt lots of different ways in which mixtures can be separated, such as filtration and evaporation. Today, the children took part in a practical experiment where they had to separate a mixture that was ‘river water’. The mixture contained water, sand and rocks and the children had to separate each substance. They used a sieve to remove the rocks from the mixture, before using a funnel and filter paper to withdraw the sand from the water. The children really enjoyed carrying out a practical investigation and did some fantastic experiment planning and evaluating too! Well done, Year 5!
