Significant people
In history, we have been learning about notable people from Heywood and exploring why they are remembered. Working in groups, we chose one individual to research and created a detailed fact file about their life, Read more
We began the week by taking part in a quiz to help us understand exactly what an engineer is and the many different types of engineering careers that exist. We discovered that engineers are creative problem-solvers who design, build and improve the world around us. It was inspiring to learn how engineering plays a part in everything from bridges and buildings to space travel and technology.
Then we turned our focus to the incredible Mae Jemison. We researched her life and achievements, learning how she became the first African American woman to travel into space. Using our creativity and teamwork skills, we designed posters to celebrate her accomplishments and to show how determination and education can help you achieve your dreams.
Our classroom then transformed into an airfield. We conducted experiments with paper aeroplanes, carefully making modifications to investigate how different parts work together. We removed wings, noses, chassis and tails to see how these alterations affected flight distance and stability. It was fantastic to see everyone thinking like real engineers—testing, evaluating and improving their designs.
During session 2 of experiments we created our own parachutes. We are looking forward to testing and modifying them to see how we can effect the landing. As true engineers, we will be analysing our results and adapting our designs to achieve a softer landing. There has already been lots of discussion about materials, surface area and air resistance!
Year 5 have shown brilliant teamwork, creativity and resilience throughout the week. We can’t wait to see what the rest of Careers Week has in store! Well done Pine!
