Some of our children recently tried the egg drop experiment at home and had a fantastic time exploring science in action. They carefully set up a glass of water, balanced a tube on top, and placed an egg above it—then, with a quick swipe, they knocked the tube away and watched in amazement as the egg dropped straight into the glass without cracking. Many of them were surprised that the egg didn’t fly off with the tube, and they learned that this is because of inertia, which keeps the egg still until gravity pulls it down into the water. It was a fun (and slightly nerve-wracking!) activity, and everyone loved testing their predictions and seeing real science happen right in their kitchens.
