Year 1 have absolutely loved celebrating Careers Week and World Book Day this week.

Year 1 explored the exciting world of engineering through both their English and DT learning. In English, the children focused on developing their oracy skills by working in groups to create toy adverts for their marble runs. They watched examples of adverts, discussed persuasive language and powerful adjectives, and planned how to introduce their product. As the week progressed, the children chose the best features of their marble runs, created catchy slogans and calls to action, and rehearsed their adverts while working on clear voices, expression and confidence. When performing their adverts, the children demonstrated excellent speaking and listening skills, showing clear progress in how they communicated their ideas to others.

In the afternoons, the children became young engineers during their DT sessions. They first learned about the famous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and the important structures he built in the 19th century. Inspired by his work, the children worked in groups to design and build their own marble runs. Throughout the process, they showed strong teamwork skills as they collaborated, shared ideas and listened to each other when making decisions. They also used problem-solving skills to test and improve their structures, thinking carefully about how the marble would travel and how to make their designs stable and effective. The children demonstrated great creativity, resilience and collaboration, working together to refine and improve their marble runs.
