During the Spring Term, Year 5 have had an exciting opportunity to learn how to play the cornet with the fantastic support of the Rochdale Music Service. Each week, the class took part in engaging music lessons where they explored the basics of brass instruments and began their journey as young musicians.
At the start of the term, many pupils had never held a cornet before. The first few sessions focused on understanding the instrument, learning how to hold it correctly, and discovering how to produce a clear sound using buzzing lips and controlled breathing. It wasn’t always easy at first, but with practice and determination the children quickly improved.
As the weeks went on, pupils began learning simple notes and rhythms. They practiced using the cornet valves to change pitch and learned how to read basic musical notation. Through fun exercises and short musical pieces, the children developed confidence and started to play together as a group.
One of the most enjoyable parts of the lessons was performing short tunes as a class. Hearing all the cornets playing together created an exciting atmosphere in the classroom and gave the pupils a real sense of achievement. They learned the importance of listening carefully, keeping in time, and supporting each other as musicians.
The lessons with Rochdale Music Service were not only about learning an instrument but also about building perseverance, teamwork, and confidence. Many pupils discovered a new interest in music and enjoyed the challenge of mastering a completely new skill.
By the end of the Spring Term, Year 5 had made fantastic progress. What started as a room full of uncertain beginners has turned into a group of enthusiastic trumpet players capable of performing simple pieces together.
A big thank you goes to Rochdale Music Service for providing such inspiring lessons and giving our pupils a wonderful musical experience. Year 5 should be very proud of everything they achieved this term!
