This week children across school have celebrated British Science Week. This years theme is ‘connections’. The children have explored the topic connections discussing how we are connected to each other, how we can connect and even thinking about how we are connecting to other countries.

In year 6 the children focused on a scientist called Mae Jemison, who was the first woman of colour to venture into space, after discussing stereotypes within science. She is such an inspiration as never gave up on her dreams and eventually spent over 190 hours in space. The children have produced an excellent piece of writing on Jemison after reading the ‘little people big dreams book’ during our science lessons.

We have then, in groups, made a rocket to set off on the playground. The children have recently been looking at energy stores and converting energy stores, so this was a perfect science experiment to look at ‘the air powered rocket’. The children looked in detail at how and why the rocket does fly into the air.

This week year 6 have thoroughly enjoyed being scientists, well done all!
