This week in Cookery Club, the children made rainbow fruit kebabs – and what a fantastic session it was!
The children began by exploring the different fruits using their senses. We talked about colours, textures and smells before moving on to an important part of Design & Technology – planning. The children looked at the fruits available and decided which order they wanted to thread them onto their skewers.
The children practised using child-safe knives to cut fruits such as bananas and strawberries. This supported them to:
- Use a safe claw grip to hold fruit steady
- Develop a controlled sawing motion
- Strengthen hand and wrist muscles
- Improve bilateral coordination (using one hand to hold, one to cut)
- Build confidence handling utensils safely
It was wonderful to see the children concentrating carefully on their cutting technique and showing pride in their independence. One of the best parts of the session was seeing so many children try fruits they hadn’t tasted before.
The children then enjoyed eating their tasty treats at the end. We can’t wait for next week!
