This week in learning for life, we were thinking about how to keep our bodies safe and healthy. We talked about how putting sun cream, soap, shampoo, creams and plasters can help us but we still need to be careful with these things. We then drew around someone’s body and talked about putting these things on and why they are important.
As we are currently studying the topic ‘weather’ in Science, and ‘Hot and Cold places in Geography’, we took the opportunity to wrap up warm and head outdoors to explore the changes created by our recent , very cold, snowy and frosty weather. In geography this week, we have been learning about temperature and how we measure temperature. We looked at different thermometers before spending time using digital thermometers to test the temperature in different areas. The children have enjoyed using the thermometers independently during COOL time too.
This week’s SMSC assembly was about tackling gender stereotypes in careers. KS1 pupils considered what a builder and a florist may look like before meeting Kimberley and her female colleagues who work in construction and then Jonathon a celebrity floral designer. This week we have been exploring future careers. we spoke to people with different careers and were shocked when our guesses weren’t correct around who did what job. we learnt that anyone can any job no matter of gender.
On Wednesday afternoon, Years 5 and 6 were visited by the scientist Adrian Bowden for an Electricity Science Show. The show started with static electricity and demonstrated some amazing experiments the children could carry out at home. We have started the year with our new class text ‘The suitcase’. During English we have been ordering the story, describing how the characters would be feeling and then we picked 4 or 5 really important things we would pack in our suitcase if we went into Space. During collective worship today we watched a video about gender stereotypes. We were given four job titles and had to first guess which title belonged to which person just based on their appearance. Next we listened to the four people answering questions about their job and again we had to guess which job belonged to them.
In today’s art lesson we learnt about a Kenyan artist called Magdalene Odundo who creates ceramic pots. As a class we explored how we can use our arm to draw big shapes and how when we draw in 2D, we can used curved lines to create the look of three dimensional shapes. Using chalk and big pieces of sugar paper, we had a go at drawing our own 3D pictures.
