Juniper have been learning about Fossils in Science. We carried out an activity to show how fossils are made. After an animal dies, the soft parts of its body decompose leaving the hard parts, like the skeleton, behind – we used sweets to symbolise these animals. They become buried by small particles of rock called sediment. As more layers of sediment build up on top, the sediment around the skeletons begins to compact and turn to rock. We used slices of bread to act like the layers of sediment. Over time the pressure on the remains becomes immense and the skeleton begins to break down leaving a fossil behind. We squashed the bread down hard with our hands to act like this pressure. When we removed the layers from each other, ‘fossils’ were left behind.
