This morning, Year 5 Juniper and Year 5 Pine visited St Luke’s Church to learn all about harvest. We took part in different activities around the church learning about different aspects of harvest. There were 5 activity stations for us to visit:

  • The first one was about the harvest of the ocean. The children made origami boats to symbolise this story.
  • The second was about the harvest of the flock. At this station the children looked at different types of wool and discussed which harvest come from sheep farming. They then went on to decorate a small wooden heart to turn into a pendant.
  • Next was the harvest of the garden where the children looked at different types of fruits and vegetables and discussed the correct time to harvest and how the ingredients are used in our food.
  • Then they moved on to the harvest loaf where they spoke about farmers harvesting their crops themselves instead of using machinery like they do today. The children mixed ingredients, smelt yeast and even had a taste of some delicious bread!
  • The final station was about not just harvesting plants and animals, but harvesting raw materials, such as clay, that can be used to create furniture and storage. The children then got their own piece of clay where they created a thumb pot a give as a gift.

The children really enjoyed their time at the church and were fascinated by the stories and information shared with them today. Thank you to St Luke’s Church and well done Year 5!
