This week in Forest School, Year 5 have focused their learning on British Science Week. The theme for British Science Week has been ‘Growth’. We discussed how growth is all around us and everyone took part in some exciting science activities.
We talked about how the population is growing and how people who work in construction are continually building to deal with this. The children worked together using natural resources to build their own towers. We discussed what would make the towers more stable and witnessed some great teamwork.
We also thought about how the population of the Gentoo Penguins is growing because they have adapted to survive in their changing climate. One reason could be because of the extremely strong nests they build to protect their young. The children worked hard trying to recreate the nests using natural resources. Some children then created ‘wind’ to test their nests out.
We talked about how humans grow and develop and discussed how physical activity is important for this. The children then created their own outdoor gyms using natural resources. We had some very creative obstacle courses and the children using stopwatches to time each other on different tasks. We even made a balancing beam across a puddle!
As well as all this, every child planted a sunflower and we discussed what the sunflower would need to grow. We chose sunflowers as they are the national flower of Ukraine and we wanted to show that the people of Ukraine are in our thoughts.
