This week in Year 5, we have been developing our understanding of angles by learning how to use a protractor. The children were excited to start using this new piece of equipment and approached the challenge with enthusiasm.

To begin with, we explored the different parts of a protractor and discussed how it is used to measure angles accurately. The children quickly noticed that there are two sets of numbers, which led to some great discussions about clockwise and anticlockwise directions.

Once we were familiar with the tool, we moved on to measuring given angles. The class worked hard to line up the centre point correctly and ensure that one arm of the angle sat neatly along the baseline. Although this was tricky at first, the children showed great perseverance and improved with each attempt.

After practising measuring angles, we challenged ourselves to draw our own. The children carefully followed the steps: drawing a baseline, placing the protractor accurately, marking the correct degree, and joining the lines. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as their angles became more precise.

We also discussed where angles can be found in everyday life, and the children came up with some fantastic examples, including clocks, door hinges, and rooftops.

Overall, it has been a fantastic week of learning. The children have shown great focus and determination, and we are very proud of the progress they have made. We look forward to continuing our work on angles next week!
