In science, year 5 have been learning about evolution. The children researched Charles Darwin and the work he did. To help reinforce our learning, we played a game outside which demonstrated the evolution of finches and their different shaped beaks using pegs, tweezers and chopsticks. We found the children with chopsticks as beaks were less likely to collect the food, which would mean they are less likely to survive and reproduce – passing on the ‘chopstick beak’ characteristic. The children who used tweezers as beaks were able to collect more food, which would mean they are more likely to survive, reproduce and pass on the ‘tweezer beak’ characteristic to their offspring.
