What is a soul?

As part of our RE topic, Year 6 discussed what they think a soul is, where it comes from, what happens to it when we die and what it looks like. The children had some fantastic and mature ideas and were able to both articulate their own thoughts and ask thoughtful and empathetic questions around the topic.

Coding Week

As part of Coding week, Year 6 looked at creating their own games on Scratch.   The children used brief guides and their own coding knowledge to create one of three games: tennis, archery or cycling.   They were able to write lines of code using sensing blocks, variables and even add scores.

Coding

This week during computing, Year 6 have been looking at coding. They have explored, investigated and made different games on scratch. The children worked very hard, thought about the schools secrets of success (don’t give up, concentrate and push yourself) whilst using scratch. Well done.

Making Formulations

Juniper have been making formulations this afternoon. We carried out an investigation in which we made some formulations using cordial and water. A formulation is made when a particular mixture is added together to create a particular product. Juniper have been formulating apple & blackcurrant drinks. Our formulations were made from differing amounts of water and cordial. We found that the more cordial that was added, the more intense the flavour.

Building Bridges and Working Together

In Year 6, we looked at how we can improve our teamwork. Activity The challenge was to build a bridge to span 30 cm using only newspaper and tape or art straws and tape. We then attempted to place 3 toy cars on the bridge to see if they could hold the weight. The children did an excellent job of working together and communicating throughout the task.

Forest School Scientists

Year 5 Pine have been creating mixtures in Forest School and linking our learning outside with our science lessons. In science, we have been learning about pure substances and mixtures. We have been thinking about the different ways to separate mixtures, including sieving, filtering and using magnets. In Forest School, the children were very creative and made some fabulous mixtures during ‘The Great Muddy Bake-off’. They wrote down their recipes and included the scientific vocabulary Read more

Separating mixtures

Within our science topic ‘particles and chemical reactions’ year 6 have been learning new scientific vocabulary such as soluble, insoluble, solvent, solute, solution particles, pure and impure substances. The children have worked very well to carry out investigations and experiments and work scientifically. Today, we used filter paper, funnels and sieves to separate different mixtures. The children recognised that some mixtures also need to be separated through evaporation. Well done Year 6

Prayers

Today we looked at how different religions pray and worship God. We discussed that prayer is how religious people talk to their God and why prayer is an important activity. We explored a range of artefacts from Hindus, Judaism, Muslim and Christians and looked at where they came from and how they are used. After that, we looked closely at the four Christian ideas of God the Father; the Creator; the Light and Love. We read Read more

A special present for Year 5 Juniper

This week we had a very special guest in Year 5 Juniper. Mrs Edyvean’s dog Roxy came to join us as part of our English lesson. Recently the children have been learning all about a boy named Ben who receives a mysterious present from his Mum that turns out to be a new puppy. The children spent time with Roxy to help generate ideas for their descriptive writing. They came up with some brilliant descriptions Read more
