This afternoon Maple have been researching different Easter traditions around the world. We carried out a ‘quiz hunt’ around the playground, searching for clues. Did you know that on the island of Corfu, on the day before Easter, the islanders throw pots made from clay, filled with water, from their balconies.! The people believe that this represents the new crops that will be grown during springtime.
This week in Literacy we have been learning all about India and have focused on the story ‘Festival Of Colours’. As part of our learning in Science, Year 6 have been provided with laboratory coats. Each lesson, one child is selected to wear the coat to represent that we are scientists and must work and think like scientists within our lesson. This week, Year 5 began their new Science topic ‘Electrical Circuits’. Our first lesson was all about static electricity. We learnt how static electricity is created, why we feel static shock, when we see evidence of static electricity and how thunder and lightning is created. To support our understanding, we experimented using balloons and went outside to use our own bodies to show how lightning and thunder are created.
Well done to all the children who participated in last weeks science challenge at home – how amazing was it to see the water rising, even after the flame on the candle had gone out. Last week the whole school carried out science activities based on the topic ‘Growth’ for British Science week. Through assemblies in class, the children discussed, drew and imagined what a scientist looked like. Today we discussed what is happening in the Ukraine. We talked about the news and what we can do if we feel upset like talking to a grown up about our feelings. We wrote letters of positivity to the children in Ukraine to make them feel happy. We planted Sunflowers as they are the national flower of the Ukraine and have become and symbol of showing support for all those affected.
This half term, we are reading the story ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ in English.
