Today Year 4 started their new Science topic all about space. We made model to show how the Earth orbits the moon and the moon orbits the Earth. We also used Oreo biscuits to help us to understand the phases of the moon. We really enjoyed eating the Oreos after the lesson! We also really enjoyed watching a video all about a solar eclipse.
In art, we have been improving a range of art skills. Before the half term, we enjoyed mixing shades of paint to make different shades of green. We also enjoyed printing using Lego blocks to make lovely bright patterns and we loved making our own stamps out of foam and paper. We used these stamps to make a collaborative print which included each of our designs.
Thursday 17th February was random acts of kindness day. This year our new Anti-bullying/ Kindness ambassadors helped to come up with some ‘Acts of kindness’ ideas that classes could take part in. Each class then chose a random act of kindness to complete. This week Maple have been learning about fractions. We began by using fraction walls and our times tables to recognise equivalent fractions. We then used this knowledge to help to simplify fractions. Today we have been converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa. We have used lots of mathematical vocabulary and are able to use words like improper, mixed number, denominator and numerator. See below for some examples of our work…
This week we have been learning about people who help us. The children have really enjoyed playing the role of doctor, applying bandages, giving injections and prescribing medicine to help their friends get better. We looked at the differences and similarities between doctors and nurses in the past and now and we learnt that hospitals used to be dirty and disorganised until Florence Nightingale changed the way they were run.
To fiinish off our topic of the Shang Dynasty we celebrated Chinese New year by creating paper lantens and making Xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) Here are some pictures of our learning.
As part of our Geography topic ‘Coastlines’ we have been learning how to keep safe near water. We have been learning about the RNLI, we went outside to find facts about the RNLI and answered questions about safety at sea.
This afternoon Maple have been working hard to share our online experiences and think about how to use the internet safely. We began by completing a class quiz together about online safety. The children really impressed me with their knowledge of how to keep safe online and gave some fantastic explanations. On Tuesday it was safer internet day with the focus being ‘All fun and games – exploring respect and relationships online’. The digital leaders have been working hard preparing and practicing for an assembly. On Tuesday they did a fantastic job delivering an assembly to Year 3. They were so confident that they delivered the assembly again during the afternoon to their own classes.
This week we have been learning about Chinese New Year. We have discussed how Chinese New Year is celebrated and how it is similar and different to how we celebrate New Year. Throughout the week we have completed different Chinese New Year activities. We have made Chinese lanterns, dragon masks and dragon paper chains.
