Beach day!

Year 5 had a great day at St Annes beach today. It was glorious weather and the children had lots of fun in the sunshine. The Lancashire Wildlife Trust set up camp for us and carried out some fantastic beach school workshops learning about the wildlife that live in the coastal habitat and how to protect them. The children explored the sand dunes using nets and found lots of minibeasts were living there. We also explored the strandline searching for signs of life such as egg cases and shells. We also carried out some practical activities to learn about the tides and why there is so much life on the beach. The children decided that they didn’t like the litter on the beach and carried out their own litter pick to clean the beach up. There was also some time to play on the beach. Everyone enjoyed building sandcastles, flying kites and frisbees. There was some fantastic teamwork going on.

Science Club week 2

we had lots of fun investigating the shaving foam rain cloud experiment. The children used shaving foam represented a cloud, the water represented the atmosphere and the food colouring represented the rain. The children found that as the cloud get heavier, gravity pulls the water down out of the clouds through the atmosphere to get the rain!

We made it rain for GSS

Today we celebrated the Great Science Share by improving our understanding of clouds. We learnt about precipitation and how clouds collect evaporated water and make rain. Here are some pictures of our experiment.

STEM challenges – GSS

Yesterday, Year 6 had a great time working on five different STEM challenges for the Great Science Share. The Great Science Share allowed the children to develop their own scientific questions,  carry out their own enquiries and to gather evidence to answer their questions.  The children had five challenges: balloon race, paper bridge, spaghetti sculpture, cup tower and foil boat. They worked very well together in their groups and asked and answered some brilliant questions. Read more
