Year 5 enjoyed their forest school sessions today, despite the wet weather. We started the session by discussing the flora and fauna in the area. Everybody was given a piece of flora and kept it hidden. We then used our language skills to describe the piece of flora to try and find out who had the same. We visited Kaden’s Garden last week and tidied up our planter! We had lots of fun digging in the mud, making sure the weeds were pulled out and put in the compost heap for recycling. After we prepped out planter, we then got some TINY carrot seeds and planted them, covered them and watered them well. We had a lot of fun.
What a lovely week week we have had learning all about the gingerbread man! We have drawn around each other to create life sized gingerbread people, moved around the field like the gingerbread man in the story, baked our own gingerbread people, decorated them and then (the best part) ate them!! Hawthorn have been inflating balloons using a gas called CO2. We mixed baking soda and vinegar to create an acid-base reaction. We learnt that the more baking soda and the more vinegar you mix, the bigger the reaction (more gas is made) causing the balloon to inflate and expand. Well done!
This half term our topic is ‘Gods and Mortals’, and in our lessons we are learning about Ancient Greece. For our topic lesson today we were lucky enough to watch a show performed by The Hobgoblin Theatre Company called Perseus and Medusa. It is one of the many Greek myths that we are studying during our topic.
Today, for our Bright Lights, Big City topic, we learnt about The Great Fire of London and how it started in a bakery. We took this opportunity and simply had to make our own sticky buns… We decided to write down a list of ingredients and instructions of how to make our own.
