Maple have been working hard with negative numbers in maths today. We worked in groups to order our negative numbers. We even made human number lines, positioning ourselves in the correct order. We spent some time calculating the differences between some positive and negative numbers and completed some fantastic work in our books.
In Year 5, we have been learning about formulations. We have learnt that a formulation is when a specific amount of substances are mixed together to create a product such as foods and fuels. We created used formulation to create a chocolate cake mixture. We then filled oranges with this mixture and baked them on a campfire.
This morning we went outside to collect leaves during our forest school lesson. We then used these leaves to create an owl picture. We have had lots of fun starting reception and we have all made lots of new friends. We have been super busy with our learning we haven’t had chance to tell you what we have been up to. This half term Year 5 are incorporating their science topic of ‘Separating Mixtures’ into their Forest School sessions. This week everyone had a great time being outdoor scientists. First we used natural resources to create diagrams showing different states of matter. After this some children explored the mixture station and used magnets and sieves to separate materials. Maple have been comparing human anatomy to other animals this afternoon. We worked in pairs to try and identify which animals have backbones and which don’t. We discussed which of these animals had exoskeletons and which had endoskeletons. We classified the animals into vertebrates and invertebrates.
We’ve had a fun first week back playing games and learning about pirates. We had a great time making pirate hats and eyes patches during our pirate party. The children have all settled into Year 2 really well and have behaved exceptionally. Images to follow…
We had our first Design Technology lesson in Year 1 this afternoon and were learning about how wheels work. We investigated how wheels move on a variety of different objects like cars, shopping trolleys and bikes and we also learnt some new vocabulary. We then we had a go at creating our own simple version of a wheel mechanism which included an axle, wheel and axle holder.
Year 5 have enjoyed their first session in the forest this week. This half term, we are doing forest science and investigating materials using the outdoor environment. Today we focused on how to keep safe in the area and discussed the rules. We talked about how to look after the area and explored the natural resources. This afternoon, Maple have been mark making with charcoal. We experimented with different textures and effects to try and express the meaning of some words. We had great fun trying to ‘draw’ anger, sadness and happiness to name a few!
