This afternoon, Willows have been looking at traditional African patterns. We learnt about an African tribe in South Africa called the Ndebele Tribe. We decided to design a rug with traditional African patterns using oil pastels. Whilst we were designing our rugs, we listened to some traditional African music, which was very relaxing! Take a look at our lovely designs.
For World Mental Health day we took part in #HelloYellow. The children looked great wearing yellow: We took part in lots of fun activities: mindfulness colouring, story meditation, funny videos of ‘talking animals’ and we made silly photographs using selfie props.
Today the school celebrated World Mental Health day by coming dressed in Yellow, to raise money for YoungMinds, and participating in a number of well-being activities. During our collective worship this afternoon, we thought about what makes us feel peaceful. This linked with World Mental Health day and we discussed how activities like reading, colouring and listening to music can help our wellbeing. Maple have been reading an amazing book this half term about a boy who eats books! He ate so many books that he became super smart. We have also been busy writing our own story about a girl who likes to eat trees and flowers. She ate so many that she was able to talk to them! Today we have been looking at Black history month, we talked about achievements of black men and women in the past and today. We then focused on a pirate called Black Caesar- he was an African tribal war chief who was captured and sold into slavery. Caesar was extremely strong and he managed to take control of the ship. He then started his life as a pirate and became very well known.
As part of our topic this half-term, we are learning about farming, so today we made a special virtual visit to Cronkshaw Fold Farm. A farmer took us on a tour whilst doing his daily farm jobs. We checked in on the goats, collected the eggs from the hens and met Tess the sheepdog puppy, who is currently training ready to work on the farm. We have been learning about the artist Andy Goldsworthy who creates art using stones, pebbles and rocks. We created mood boards so we could explore some of his work and then we created our own piece of art work using stones that we collected from around the school grounds.
