In Maths today, we’ve begun our new topic – area. The children have learnt that area means the amount of space that something covers. We investigated the area of different shapes using counters and explained why it is important to use the same size counter when measuring the area.
Maple have been finding out all about the Celts this morning. We worked in groups to mind map information about their homes, the clothes they wore, the tribes they were part of, the religion they followed and the types of warrior they were. The children then presented their findings to the rest of the class.
Year 6 have been learning about the ABO blood group system and the importance of blood transfusions. All the children in class had to complete an entry ticket before they entered to show what they had remembered from the previous lesson. We used strategies from the Writing Revolution to help improve our writing and write a report about the role of the Austrian Physician, Karl Landsteiner in distinguishing the main blood groups.
This week we have been learning about Chinese New Year. We have made paper lanterns, learnt the New Year story and created puppets for the characters, made Chinese dragons and tasted some Chinese food. It was very yummy!

What is blood made up of? In this lesson we learned what makes up our blood. We found that our blood is 55% plasma, <1% white blood cells and platelets and 44% red blood cells. We made an artificial ‘blood sample’ using vegetable oil, syrup, food colouring and milk to represent the different components. This created our own centrifuge, just like a scientist would use!
Year 5 have had a fantastic afternoon with professional dancers from the Northern Ballet School. It was the first of our dance workshops, which is leading to performances at the Bridgewater Hall and the Hallé St Peter’s. The children grew in confidence during the session, used their growth mindsets and made fantastic progress.
