How much time do you spend looking at a screen?

Today in Computing we’ve been discussing how much time we actually spend using screens, during a typical week – that includes watching television! We created a collaborative database and watched Mrs Grindrod’s whiteboard as all the results from each class member started to be collated. We were really surprised at how much time we spend looking a screen and have decided that we need to get out and play in the fresh air a lot Read more

Investigating multiples outside

We took our Power Maths lesson outside today! Using the number square on the playground, Year 5 answered lots of questions regarding multiples and sorted themselves into different groups. They used their reasoning skills to explain some true and false statements, using the number square to help with their explanations.

Oreo Phases of the Moon

Year 5 had a great time investigating the phases of the moon. We discussed how the moon appears to be different shapes as it orbits the Earth. We then carried out a practical activity using role play acting out the orbits. After this, we created an edible diagram of the phases of the moon using Oreo biscuits. Finally we had a quiz to check our understanding and ate the biscuits!

Cosmic Reading

Year 5 have enjoyed getting into our new book ‘Cosmic’ by Frank Cottrell Boyce. We have just read up to the part where Liam is on a flight to China with his friend Florida after winning a competition. We have made predictions about what we think will happen next and enjoyed role play activities to think about how the characters are feeling.

Story writers

We have been writing the end of our class story this week and creating a new character idea. We had lots of fantastic ideas for our new character from evil fairies, footballers, prickly hedgehogs, magical unicorns or cruel Pirates: We worked with a partner to create lots of ideas then we picked our favourite idea to add to our own story.

Secret Reader

This is morning we were very excited to see who our secret reader was going to be…. It was Daniel’s Mummy; Daniel was the most excited! Daniel’s Mummy read a cat in the hat story, it had sooooo many cats in the story and we really enjoyed it. At the end of the story we showed that we liked the story by giving it a big thumbs up and telling our friends which was Read more

Outdoor Maths

This morning the children have learnt all about perimeter. We used metre sticks, tape measures and trundle wheels to measure the distance around the shapes we had drawn on the playground.

Room on the Broom 🧹

This week we have been learning about ‘Room on the Broom’. On Monday, there was a letter left in our classroom with a bow. We were all very confused until we opened the letter. We read the letter together and found out that it was from the witch in ‘Room on the Broom’. She was asking for our help to make a lovely smelling potion. After reading the story and finding out a little bit Read more

Secret Reader

We were very excited today to see Eden’s mum come and read us a story. It was very exciting having a look in her bag and trying to guess the story she was going to read. We couldn’t believe it when she told us that it was a Room on a Broom. It is our book of the week! Thank you for coming to read to us!
