Science club Week 4

This week in Science club we had lots of fun making lava lamps! The children used scientific vocabulary to make predictions about what would we think would happen. The children then conducted the experiment and used vegetable oil, water, food colouring and effervescent tablets to make their lava lamps. We discussed why the water and oil didn’t mix together and why the tablet caused the mixture to make bubbles!

Setting the butterflies free

This morning it was time to let our butterflies go! We have watched them grow from being tiny caterpillars, to forming their chrysalis and then emerging as butterflies. It has been so interesting to watch them and we have learnt so much about the life cycle of a butterfly. Whilst we were in Kaden’s garden, we also spotted some baby frogs. Some still had their tail attached.

Urenco Science Workshop

Today Year 5 had a very exciting morning. A scientist from Urenco came in school to carry out some practical investigations with the children. First, we worked together to separate pasta, salt and lentils. After this, we discussed what makes a good scientific observation and the children observed different powders. the children then observed what happened when they added a liquid and discussed the acidity and alkalinity of the powders. The children followed safety instructions Read more

This morning, Year 5 have had an amazing time participating in an exciting science workshop. Our visitor from Urenco, provided children with the opportunity to investigate sorting materials by conducting various experiments. Year 5 were able to gain a deeper understanding of working scientifically, safely and methodically to achieve their results. Children were able to scientifically investigate: Separating salt, lentils and paste using a sieve. Observing ‘identical’ substances to look for subtle differences. Sorting these Read more

Dancing Raisins

During Science, we conducted an experiment called ‘Dancing Raisins’. We placed raisins in water and also in lemonade. The raisins in lemonade started to dance. The combination of raisin and gas is less dense than the raisin alone, so when many “bubbles” form on the raisin, they lift the raisin to the surface. When some of the bubbles break, the density increases, the raisins sink and then the whole process is repeated. This makes the Read more
