STEM ambassadors

Congratulations to our new STEM ambassadors! Their role in school is to promote science, plan, carry out and evaluate different scientific enquiries. Yesterday, our STEM ambassadors investigated ‘How far can a paper aeroplane fly’ as part of the Ogden Trust. School Council

Congratulations to our new school council! This year, our school council will be running slightly differently. We are now working with ‘Smart School Council’ which gives us access to digital tools that involve every pupil in decision making, social action and developing key skills for life. The school council will be ran entirely by the pupils (supported by Miss Lomax) ensuring their voices are heard and their decisions and ideas are acted upon where possible. Read more

The Benin Kingdom

In History, Year 5 are studying the Benin Kingdom. So far we have learnt about how the Benin Kingdom began, what life was like for the Edo people in the Benin Kingdom and how trade links established and what goods were traded. As part of these lessons we have sketched Benin masks, acted out trading between Benin and other European countries and made bracelets using Cowrie shells

The Gruffalo’s child

This week we have been reading the story ‘The Gruffalo’s child’, we identified the characters in the story and we worked together to Fred talk the sounds. During choosing time we have been able to create our own footprints using paint and played with our very own Gruffalo crumble. We hope the Gruffalo comes to visit us at St Luke’s school before he gets turned into Gruffalo crumble!

Area and Perimeter

During the last couple of weeks, Year 5 have been working hard on perimeter and area. To help  us remember how to calculate perimeter, and to remember the difference between perimeter and area, we learnt a song about Peri the snail.

Hidden sugars

For our new Design and technology unit we are learning all about healthy eating.  This week we looked at hidden sugars in drinks.  We had to guess how many teaspoons of sugar were in Coke, Diet Coke, a Smoothie and Strawberry water. We were really surprised that there are 9 teaspoons of sugar in one can of coke! We then all tried a small amount of regular Coke and Diet Coke. It was really good Read more

Children in Need and Anti-bullying week

This week we have been talking about bullying, what it means and what to do if you feel you are being bullied. We watched an assembly explaining what bullying is and we made a pledge to stop bullying.  On a hand we wrote 5 people we feel we could speak to if we feel like we are being bullied. On Friday we all looked fantastic in our pyjamas or Pudsey outfits.

Anti-bullying and Children In Need

This week St Luke’s have celebrated both anti-bullying week and Children in Need. Earlier in the week, we watched ‘The Big anti-bullying assembly’ and discussed what bullying is, who can support us if we are being bullied and and how we can help put a stop to bullying.
