This afternoon Maple have been learning all about structures. We carried out some research on ‘Pavilions’ and learnt about world expos. We worked in groups to make a variety of different frame structures. Have a look at our photographs to see our building in progress and our finished structures.
This week, Year 6 were lucky enough to have the chance to watch a fantastic performance of ‘Blurred Lines’, which discusses and explores the topic of child criminal exploitation (CCE). The child watched a video and discussed issues based on a work pack provided to support their understanding of a sensitive, but serious subject. This week in Maths, Maple have been learning about Perimeter. We looked at different shapes and ran our fingers around the edges to understand what we meant by the distance around a shape. We calculated the perimeters of the different shapes we had drawn. We also set ourselves the challenge of drawing as many different shapes as we could with a perimeter of 12cm.
Throughout the day, Year 6 had to opportunity to remember those who lost their lives at war making a better life for us. Firstly, both classes walked to the local cenotaph to lay our schools’ poppy wreath. Today we have learnt about Diwali and why some people celebrate it in different religions. We spent all morning creating rangoli patterns and making our own mehndi hand designs. We learnt about bonfire night and why we celebrate it on the 5th of November. We took part in creative activities all afternoon and even threw our own powder paint fireworks. On Thursday Maple visited the M6 Theatre Company as part of our Linking Schools network. The children met and worked with a Year 4 class from Ashfield Valley Primary. As well as watching a theatre production, the children produced some drama work about looking after our world. As part of our history unit ‘Movers and Shakers’ and Black History month, we have been learning about Rosa Parks. We have learned about the impact she has had. She was arrested when she refused to give up her seat for a white passenger on a bus.
In literacy we have been reading the story the little red hen. The animals did not want to help the hen make the bread until it was time to eat the bread.
