In science, year 5 have been learning about evolution. The children researched Charles Darwin and the work he did. To help reinforce our learning, we played a game outside which demonstrated the evolution of finches and their different shaped beaks using pegs, tweezers and chopsticks. To help revisit key grammatical skills, Year 6 looked at playing ‘Zombies v Soldiers’ as part of our Grammar lesson. We had to identify different world classes, conjunctions, tenses and more! The more questions answered correctly, the more the zombies could move forward, with the soldiers trying to fight back!
This afternoon the children have been thinking about the houses in the three little pigs story. We talked about the different materials they were made out of and whether those materials were a good choice to build with. We had a great time in our forest school lesson this week. We used team work and good communication skills to build dens to shelter us from the storm (Mr Tomkins and his water guns). We used a variety of materials including tarpaulin , ropes and natural resources to build the shelters.
Year 6 have taken part in 6 workshops across 3 weeks, looking at the role of sports journalists, guided by journalist, Gareth Walker. Taking a different historical sporting moment each session, Gareth has guided the children through the process of how to create a quality piece of journalistic writing. From writing catchy openings, to sub-editing and writing live blogs, the children have developed a range of skills, producing a number of fantastic newspaper reports.
This half term we are learning about Judaism in our RE lesson and this morning we went to Bury Hebrew Congregation to learn a little bit more about a Synagogue. We found it very interesting and learnt lots of new things. We were lucky enough to get the chance to look at a Torah up close – we learnt that it is written in Hebrew and they read it from right to left.
This afternoon, Year 5 have really enjoyed tasting a variety of Asian foods during our R.E. lesson. Children have been learning about Muslims in Britain today and the recent Muslim celebration of Eid-Ul-Fitr. As part of our preparation for SATs, we have looked at how we can recap familiar topics through different games and investigations. We’ve looked at using fractions, decimals and percentages to create patterns based on a set of rules and clues, dice games to practise multiplication and division and problem solving to find equivalents.
Today we have looked at different types of relationships that we have in our life and discussed how we have different relationships with different people. We then drew some green leaves onto our tree template and wrote 5 things that can make a relationship positive. Next, we drew branches and wrote ways to achieve each of the 5 things. We have started our topic of Greek Myths by exploring one of the stories Theseus and the Minotaur. We learnt that Theseus had to travel through the labyrinth to the monster.
