Thank you to those parents and family members who were able to attend our shared learning. After introducing our Geography topic, Fieldwork, we set children and adults the task of producing a poster to be displayed at the front of school to try and make Queen’s Park Road safer for our school community.
Year 6 were able to work with Breaking Barriers once again, this time watching the monologue “Blind Side” as well as the video “Level the Playing Field” which featured a number of St Luke’s pupils. During our RE lessons this half term, we are focusing on fights and giving sand the story of Christmas. We have particularly focused on one part of the Christmas story where baby Jesus is born and lies in the manager. We spoke about the importance of knowing the true meaning of Christmas and where baby Jesus lay when he had special visitors. Year 2 took part in a Coding workshop focused on healthy eating. The children met a robot called Al who needed algorithms to help pack a healthy lunchbox. They also explored how to debug when mistakes occurred. The class asked thoughtful questions about Coding, such as why humans don’t just do the job themselves. This led to a discussion about how robots can complete boring, repetitive tasks more quickly than people.
During our English lessons we have been looking at Aladdin. Today the children imagined how Aladdin would feel when he was trapped underground whilst looking for the lamp. We used the fantastic grid to help us. We walked around the classroom, listening to dramatic music. We looked at dramatic phrases and decided where they would go on our fantastic grid.
This week, Year have begun to add number to 10. We have completed lots of practical lessons so far to help children begin to understand this concept. Children have worked hard to use number lines, manipulatives and counting on to help them..
During our science lesson, we created walls for the classroom in a rainforest using a different range of materials to see if they are waterproof. We worked in teams and listened to one another to build the walls. We also thought about which jobs would help us build walls in the real world. We were all builders and some architects! The children did a great job creating their walls and had great fun!
This half term in Year 4, our DT topic is Structures: Pavilions. In our first lesson we have been exploring different frame structures to test which are the most stable, using toothpicks and sweets. This afternoon, Year 5 Juniper have started their new Design and Technology unit – Electrical Systems: Doodlers. For today’s lesson, the children looked at the different components that create a simple circuit. They were able to identify crocodile wires, batteries, bulbs and motors. This week we are reading ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. Today we became bakers and baked non-dairy cupcakes to put in little red riding hood’s picnic basket. We all helped to weigh out and mix ingredients and then decorate our cakes. We then enjoyed eating them! Yummy!
