Floating and Sinking

This afternoon, we have been learning about floating and sinking. We have completed an experiment to see if objects float or sink. Everyone discussed their predictions and what we thought would happen. We used a carrot, cotton wool, a potato, an apple, a lemon and a stick. We found out that a carrot, cotton wool and a potato all sink. When we put each object into our bowl of water, they all sank to the Read more

Macro Photography

This week we have been inspired by Edward Weston (photographer), who lived from 1886 to 1958. He was a American Photographer who focused on details images of various items such as fruits, vegetables and landscapes. We looked at a variety of his images using adjectives to describe them, then we had to guess what the item was.  Using iPads the children photographed many different fruits and vegetables in the classroom, then we picked the background Read more

Conduction

Through drama and demonstrations today Year 6 discussed and explored how heat is conducted through solids, liquids and gases. The children discussed how the particles vibrate much quicker when heated; how they collide into each other; how vibrations are passed through each particle until thermal equilibrium is reached. We set up a demonstration of a metal knife and then discussed how heat is transferred and also acted this out in groups (children acting as a Read more

Improving our sentences

Year 6 have been working extremely hard to produce some excellent work in our English lessons. During our grammar session today, we looked at different ways in which we can improve a very simple sentence. The children worked in pairs to add in adjectives, adverbs, similes and relative clauses to make their sentence the best it could be. We went from ‘The boy stepped into the house’ to ”Cautiously and anxiously tip-toeing through the darkness, Read more

Spreadsheets

Maple have been working on producing spreadsheets on their laptops this afternoon. We inputted some data and used to 2calulate to produce some line graphs and bar charts. We used the graphs to answer questions about the data.

The Evil Pea

That cheeky Evil Pea has been up to no good again! When we arrived at school we had some letters from our friends. They had seen the Evil Pea in our local shops and when we got to school all of our carrots were frozen! It was our job to save our carrots and keep that Evil Pea away. We hope the Evil Pea does not come back next week!

Thermal equilibrium

In science year 6 explored thermal equilibrium through two different hands on, practical activities. We discussed how when we say something is ‘hot’ or ‘cold’ we are saying it is hot or cold compared to us. The children explored this theory by placing their hands in freezing water, room temperature water and hot water. The children recognised that thermal equilibrium can be reached through the transfer of heat through a conductor, such as metal. We Read more

Human form – skulls

This week we have been inspired by Damien Hirst’s skull art works and other examples of decorated skulls in different cultures. We traced over an image of a skull and then decorated it using pastels and patterns of our choice. They look amazing:   Once we had finished we walked around the classroom to look at all the different pieces of art, then we gave feedback about which ones we liked and why.

Supertato

This week when we arrived at school we had a letter at the front office. When we opened the letter it was from The Evil Pea. The Evil Pea had captured all the fruit and vegetables in our classroom and taped them to the floor. It was our job to save them, we found the story Supertato and found out that Supertato saved the day. Supertato tricked The Evil Pea and trapped him back in Read more
