Cookery Club Week 2 – Sausage Rolls

In our school cookery club this week we had great fun making sausage rolls. Before we started, we practised our planning skills by looking at the recipe and talking about the ingredients and steps. This helped everyone feel ready and organised. We also focused on food hygiene. The children washed their hands carefully, and learned how to handle raw meat safely. D and T – evaluating biscuits

This week in Year 4, we became food designers as part of Design and Technology lesson on adapting a recipe. Our mission was to explore different types of biscuits, taste and evaluate them, and then use our findings to help us design our own adapted biscuit recipe. Dissecting flowers

In Year 5 this half term, we are carrying out a topic on life cycles and reproduction. We started our brand new topic yesterday where we began by looking at the reproductive system of a flower. We discussed the life cycle of a plant and looked at each stage of the process: seed stage, germination stage, seedling stage, leaf growing stage, flowering stage, pollination stage, and back to seed stage. Plants

This half term Pine are learning about lifecycles and reproduction in plants. In our lesson today we have dissected lilies and tulips to identify the different parts of a flower. We have observed and compared equivalent parts in different flowers and described the lifecycle of a plant, including the reproductive stage.

Planting

This half term we are learning about Spring. We are focusing on planting and the new things that will grow during this season. This week, we have learnt about what a plant needs to grow and how to plant one carefully. Each child has planted either a sunflower or a nasturtium. We can’t wait to watch them grow and change in class and then bring them home.

Creating sculptures

To complete our sculpture focus during our art lesson, we worked together  create a 3D sculpture. We created a gigantic spider. We worked together to fold and roll news paper and then attach pieces together to create the legs, arms and body of the spider.

Classifying animals

This half term during our science lessons, Year 1 are learning about animals. For our first lesson, we named and classified animals and understood which groups animals belonged too. We learnt new vocabulary such as reptiles, amphibians and mammals. We were already familiar with fish and birds. the children have also continued their learning in provision by making animals with play doh and continued to categorised animals.

Exploring the life of Charles Darwin

Year 5 have been busy this week researching the life and achievements of Charles Darwin. Using iPads, the children worked in pairs to search for information. They explored important events in Darwin’s life, including his voyage on the HMS Beagle and how his observations led to new scientific ideas about evolution.
