Science – Living Organisms and Organ Systems

To begin our science topic – Cells – we looked at what characteristics organisms need have to be classed as living.   We used the term ‘Mrs Gren’ to help us to remember all 7: Movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excrete and nutrition. We then planted cress seeds and looked at how the plants moved towards a light source as they convert sunlight into food (photosynthesis). We then looked at how organ systems in plants Read more…

Waterproof or absorbent

In science, we have been learning about waterproof and absorbent materials. We completed an experiment to see if different objects were absorbent or waterproof. We poured water on different objects and if the object soaked up (absorbed) the water we knew it was absorbent and if it didn’t absorb the water then it was waterproof.

The Gingerbread Man

This week we have been reading the story ‘The Gingerbread Man’, we talked about who made the gingerbread man and who ran after him. We noticed that the fox tricked the gingerbread man into jumping onto his nose and gobbled him up. We used adjectives to describe the fox and talked to our partners. We then spoke about what our gingerbread person would look like and designed our own. Next we went outside to design Read more…

Decorating Gingerbread People

This week we have been reading The Gingerbread Man in our literacy lessons. We have learnt how to retell the story and we have been designing our own gingerbread person. The children used coloured icing pens to help with their fine motor skills and chose the decorations carefully. They had lots of fun doing this!

Viking Longships

This week Year 4 Maple have continued our exploration of Vikings by learning about Viking longships. We spent the afternoon pretending to be Saxon spies searching the shore to find out more information about our enemies ships. The children worked in teams to create diagrams of the ships. We then had a visit from a captured Viking. We spent time thinking of questions to ask and then got information from our Viking friend which we Read more…

Challenge 4 – digital leader

For challenge 4 we created a video to show how a reading app called DigiSmart works.  This app is going to be used in Key Stage 2 after half term so each class will be able to watch this video to explain what DigiSmart is and how to use it. To begin the digital leaders had a play on the app so they could see how it works. After they were confident using this app Read more…

Yoga Time!

Year 4 have been learning the art of Yoga this afternoon. We have all enjoyed learning how to deliver a ‘peer massage’, with the permission of our friend. We all felt extremely relaxed afterwards! We know that this is a technique that we can now use when we are feeling low or anxious about something. We have also been meditating and have discussed the importance of feeling calm and peaceful.

Goldilocks and the three bears

This week we have been reading the story ‘Goldilocks and the three bears’ and answered lots of questions. We talked to our partners about how Goldilocks was feeling when she woke up to the bears and how the bears were feeling when they saw Goldilocks in their house. We tried our own porridge with strawberry sauce, lemon and chocolate sauce to see which one was our favourite and we counted how many children liked each one. Read more…

Deciduous or Evergreen?

In our Science topic ‘Plants’ we have been looking at different types of trees. We went for a walk around the school grounds to discover if we had both Deciduous and Evergreen Trees in the grounds. We found lots of Deciduous trees which we now know have large, flat leaves with veins, these types of trees lose their leaves in Autumn. We also found some Evergreen trees which have thick, needle like leaves, these trees Read more…

How have humans evolved over time?

In science this half term, we have been learning about evolution. This lesson looked at how humans have evolved over time and how they became successful predators. We discussed how humans learned to use tools to gather foods, which meant they were more likely to survive as they could get more food. We then enjoyed making bows and arrows outside. We also discussed how humans could make and use fire to scare bigger animals away Read more…
